The Talented Mr Ripley : A Review

Mr Ripley's lips stretch gently and then devilishly open up to a grin. This is the classic Matt Damon smile but this is not 'Good will hunting'. The opening credits which rip the screen page one by one to reveal Ripley's face , this is how Ripley's character is supposed to unfold in the movie.

He is ingenuity will make you want to pardon his demons. This movie has so many underpinning themes running through it; from homosexuality, necromancy to friendship and all originate from Ripley's non expectant behavior. Jude law is impeccable, his acting as enticing as his eyes. Dickie Greenleaf is the spoiled son, a betraying lover and a menacing friend. Dickie's most unpardonable sin is that he makes you his best friend and than he disowns you like you are the scum of the earth and this leads to very unexpected steps to be taken by Ripley.

There are two scenes which I absolutely adore in the movie. One, where Ripley and Dickie share a moment in the hot bath tub but its unclear whether they share the moment like brothers or like lovers. Second, where Ripley smells the lapel of Dickie's coat while is asleep! Creepy, right? These scene gives deep insight into Ripley's psyche and tells us how much he loves impersonating people so much so he wants to even smell like them.

We all make mistakes , his mistakes are more unforgiving than ours. No soul is infallible and this soul just wants to take your identity and live 'as you' not just like you. Ripley grieves whilst he strangles your throat, this killing game isn't easy for him. Easy way out? Don't make him do it.
